About Ground Glass Photography

Meet The Photographer

Hi and welcome! My name is Alicia Stewart and Ground Glass is my photography brand.

I started Ground Glass Photography as a student studying Design and Photography in Wellington at Massey University. I began by picking up photoshoots for fellow students studying fashion design and exploring the studio and the full suite of lights and lenses that we had access to.

After picking up a few jobs from the Uni notice board, word of mouth marketing did its thing and I used Photography as an outlet from my day job from that point onwards.

A people person at heart I love throwing myself into my clients special moments, whether it be getting an award on stage or celebrating a new arrival to the family. Get in touch with me to see how I can help you.

What is a Ground Glass?

In Photography, ground glass is a frosted or matte surface used in camera viewfinders, particularly in large-format cameras, to allow photographers to view the image projected by the lens and assess focus and composition.

A ground glass acts as a projection screen, enabling photographers to see the image formed by the lens, which is then used to determine focus and composition. The image that appears will be upside down and back to front and appears in full color, directly on the glass, even though the early cameras were only able to capture black and white.

You focus the image using the lens and check through a magnifying glass called a loop. Early cameras meant you literally had to move the subject or the camera back or forwards to achieve an in focus portrait!

So there you go, a truly nerdy name for an old camera nerd like me.
